Myostatin (GDF8)
GDF-8 · Growth differentiation factor 8
A TGF-beta-family signaling protein studied in skeletal-muscle regulation. The catalog’s HMP modifier remains unresolved; it should not be assumed to identify a myostatin inhibitor.
Not for human or veterinary use.
What is myostatin (GDF8 / GDF-8)? These names refer to growth differentiation factor 8, a signaling ligand associated with restraint of skeletal-muscle growth. The ligand is distinct from antibodies or other antagonists that inhibit it.
GDF8 biology and the original experimental evidence
Myostatin, also called growth differentiation factor 8, belongs to the TGF-beta protein family. It is a signaling ligand associated with restraint of skeletal-muscle growth, not itself the same thing as an antibody or other compound that blocks myostatin. The original mouse gene-disruption study by McPherron, Lawler, and Lee reported markedly enlarged muscles in animals lacking functional GDF8, arising from both increased fiber size and increased cell number. That experiment concerns loss of myostatin function; it does not describe muscle growth caused by adding myostatin protein. [1]
Signaling research and the unresolved HMP designation
Later experimental work examines myostatin and related ligands through the Smad2/3 signaling pathway, including use of ligand-specific antagonists to distinguish their contributions to muscle-mass regulation. This makes GDF8 relevant to studies of muscle development, atrophy, receptor signaling, and inhibitory proteins. [2] Umbrella Labs describes its Myostatin (GDF-8) listing as a recombinant research reference and a protein that limits muscle growth. Its current title does not include “HMP.” [3] Consequently, the present description identifies the GDF8 biology while leaving the HMP modifier unresolved. A sequence or manufacturer specification would be needed to distinguish mature myostatin, precursor/propeptide material, or a differently named antagonist.
Research evidence is not product characterization
A product title does not establish sequence, protein form, identity, purity or biological activity. Published studies do not verify Heritage Bio Labs material. Until a confirmed sequence or manufacturer specification is available, mature myostatin, precursor/propeptide material and a differently named antagonist must not be treated as interchangeable.
